2 New York helicopter crash victims identified as tech boss, his wife, and their 3 children

The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from Lower Manhattan at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Just fifteen minutes later, the aircraft spiraled out of control and plunged into the Hudson River near Pier 40, in full view of stunned witnesses along the Manhattan waterfront.

Onlookers described a terrifying sequence. Some heard what sounded like a “sonic boom,” followed by the tail and rotors detaching mid-air. The helicopter reportedly nosed downward before crashing into the water. Videos posted to social media showed the aircraft spiraling without its rotors before flipping upside down upon impact.

Sarah Jane Raymond Ryer, who witnessed the crash, recalled the propeller spinning separately from the body of the aircraft. “It kept spinning in the air alone. Nothing was attached to it,” she told CBS. The chaos and confusion rippled through the area as emergency crews rushed to respond.

Divers from the NYPD and FDNY recovered all six people. Four were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to local hospitals, where they later died. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the details, emphasizing the swift but tragic nature of the recovery efforts.

Escobar, who had built a distinguished career with Siemens Mobility, was widely respected in his field. He had most recently served as CEO of Rail Infrastructure and previously led operations across Spain and Southwest Europe. His wife, also a professional with Siemens, and their three children, ages 4, 5, and 11, had only just arrived in New York earlier that same day. The family was reportedly celebrating one of the children’s birthdays with the helicopter tour.

Images taken before takeoff captured the family smiling in front of the helicopter. They were hugging, giving thumbs-ups, and wearing ear protection and life vests, unaware of the horror that lay minutes ahead. Those photos have since been removed from the company’s website.

A former colleague of Escobar, Juan Ignacio Diaz, described him as a calm and composed leader. “No matter how hard things got, he always stayed calm… He had this way of making things feel OK, even when they weren’t,” he said. “And he never forgot what mattered most — his family.”

Michael Roth, owner of New York Helicopter, later revealed that the pilot had radioed the base just minutes into the flight, reporting low fuel and an intent to return. “He called in that he was landing and that he needed fuel… but 20 minutes later, he didn’t arrive,” Roth told The Telegraph. Roth said one of his other pilots spotted the helicopter upside down in the water and confirmed the worst. “I’m a father and a grandfather, and we’re just devastated.”

As of now, the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Roth admitted, “We have no clue what happened,” but noted that video footage showed the rotor blades were no longer on the aircraft during its descent.

President Donald Trump also responded to the tragedy, posting on Truth Social, “Terrible helicopter crash in the Hudson River… the footage of the accident is horrendous. God bless the families and friends of the victims.”

Weather at the time of the crash included overcast skies, 10 miles of visibility, and gusts of wind reaching up to 21 miles per hour. The water temperature was near 50 degrees. Following the crash, the Coast Guard established a safety zone on the river, halting vessel traffic and impacting ferry operations.

Nearby residents described the terrifying moment. Jenn Lynk said it sounded like an engine falling out of the sky. “I looked outside my window… some people were running, and some were acting normal. But then the sirens came.” Another resident, Ipsitaa Banigrhi, described a loud boom and black particles flying. “I thought maybe it was thunder or dust… then we heard all the emergency vehicles and sirens.”

This tragedy has shaken both the local community and international observers. The loss of the Escobar family has been deeply felt across the global transportation sector, where both Agustín and Merce had made their mark.

As the investigation continues, the hope is that answers will emerge to prevent such a heartbreaking incident from happening again. In the meantime, a city—and many across the world—mourns an unimaginable loss.
