There are times when we get sad news and we must report it. We recently heard something that we are passing along, as there is a beloved celebrity who has passed away at the age of 65.
Mama Mary Schmucker, who is known for her part in the TLC series, Breaking Amish passed away after a three-year battle with colon cancer. Her family has confirmed that she died peacefully in her home in Pennsylvania on Friday.
Mary had been fighting cancer since 2022 and in November 2024, she entered hospice care. An Instagram update was sent from her daughter-in-law, Rebecca, who was asking for prayers during the final days.
Rebecca said: “I’m making a prayer request for mom. She’s not feeling good the last few weeks and can’t keep anything down and she’s having trouble eating. She is on hospice now. Her pain has been so bad and they are helping with that. If you could, flood her with positive messages and pray for her to be comfortable and pain free. Thank you! ”
Mary was always a favorite for many fans in the Breaking Amish series. She also appeared in Return to Amish, the spinoff series from that TLC show. She had a large following on social media, with some 35,000 fans on Instagram who would regularly watch her live streams.
The final Instagram post from Mary came in September 2023. Since then, many fans have come to leave their heartfelt messages on that post regarding her loss.
She is survived by Chester, her husband and their five children, including Amy, Katie Ann, and Andy. They are well-known from the series.
Breaking Amish premiered on TLC in 2012. It offered a look behind the scenes at young Mennonite and Amish adults as they leave their communities to experience the world outside.
In the series, a group of cast members are followed to New York City where they face up to modern temptations and the struggles that they face when they have to return to a more traditional way of life.
The series had a lot of very emotional moments and cultural clashes, so it quickly became a popular series. Mary Schmucker, who was known as ‘Mama Mary’ had a personality that helped her become a fan favorite.
There were some obvious staged elements to the show, and questions surrounded the backgrounds of the cast. Even so, it was still a very popular thing to watch.
