Your $2 bill may be worth a lot more than you think

The $2 bill has long been seen as unlucky, with many believing it came with a curse. However, in reality, it’s not jinxed and could be worth a lot more than its face value.

Though rarely used, there were 1.6 billion $2 bills in circulation as of 2023, compared to billions of $1 and $20 bills. The note has often been unpopular, with some even damaging it in hopes of reversing the supposed curse.

The $2 bill first featured Alexander Hamilton in 1862, then Thomas Jefferson in 1869, a design that remains today. Despite its unpopularity, some $2 bills are worth thousands.

Older, uncirculated $2 bills from 1862–1896 with red, brown, or blue seals can be worth up to $5,000, while circulated versions can fetch around $1,100. Bills from 1917–1928 with red or blue seals are worth $50 to $1,000, depending on condition. Bills with “fancy serial numbers” can go up to $6,000.
